Pizzeria Mozza – Affordable for MBS Standards

A visit to Marina Bay Sands always puts me in a dilemma. On one hand, a meal at the handful of celebrity and fine dining restaurants would surely bust my budget. On the other, paying over $10 for a food court meal isn’t an enticing option either. However, an optimal compromise would be Pizzeria Mozza, a reasonably priced Italian joint that has the backing of Mario Batali, who has appeared on Iron Chef America on multiple occasions.

Despite being a Wednesday, the restaurant filled up quickly and without reservations, one can only be resigned to counter seats, that’s if you are even fortunate enough to get one.

For a pre-theatre meal for 2 pax, a single portion of appetizer, main and dessert is just nice in my opinion, especially if you are thinking of getting a pizza as a main.

The Prawns Al Forno with Potato & Salsa Romesco ($19++) was a good choice for a starter, featuring 2 grilled prawns atop slices of roasted potatoes smeared with Salsa Romesco, which tasted very much like a meat based pasta sauce.

For our pizza main, we ordered the Burrata, Slow-roasted Tomato & Sicilian Oregano Pizza ($30++). The flavour of the tomatoes was pretty concentrated and the tang was a little overwhelming at first bite. After a while however, we quickly got accustomed to the strong flavours and also discovered the function of the burrata in neutralizing the tartness of the tomatoes. On the whole, I think it was a decent attempt, though I would have preferred a thinner outer crust.

For desserts, we got a serving of Gelato – Chocolate Malt, Vanilla & Olive Oil ($17++). Nothing out of the norm for the chocolate malt and the vanilla but this was definitely a first for the olive oil and I know of no other places that serves it. The taste was rather interesting, a little on the savoury side especially with the light sprinkling of salt flakes which was easily detectable.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that this is the best pizzeria in Singapore but based on the 2 meals I have had here, I would say that the quality of both the food and service is pretty consistent.

Cafe Melba – Of Green Meadows and Blow-up Castles

Easterners have been lamenting over the lack of brunch places in the East for the longest time, at least I have. Recently however, I chanced upon this laid back Australian brunch place at Goodman Arts Centre near Mountbatten MRT. I’m surprised there’s not much online coverage about it yet, especially since it gets pretty packed with expats during the weekends. I guess word of mouth travels fast.

Facing a field of green, it makes for a perfect setting for a weekend brunch. The cafe seems to be both pet and children friendly, as I saw dogs playing in the field which I assume to be pets of the customers, and a blow up castle entertains the kids as they bounce up and down on it.

The menu features brunch items, appetizers, mains, sides and a variety of pizzas.

Considering that this is an Australian eatery, some items on the menu seem out of place, such as the Melba Beef Rendang ($18++). Cooked in Coconut Milk, Ginger and Spices, I found the Rendang to be very ordinary and a little too spicy. Instead of rice, you get pizza bread to complement the rendang, a little bit of east meets west. As rendangs of such quality can easily be sought after in most nasi padang stalls, I wouldn’t recommend it here. The best thing was probably the shoestring fries which comes freshly fried alongside the dish.

The Full Melba Cooked Breakfast ($24++) comes with a choice of Eggs (Scrambled, Poached or Sunny Side Up), Pork Sausages, Cured Bacon, Roasted Cherry Vine Tomatoes, Baked Beans, Mushrooms and Home-made Toast. It sounds heavier than it really is and personally, an extra side of sauteed potatoes would have completed this breakfast platter.

The Free-range Eggs Benedict ($18++) arrived with 2 puny kampong chicken eggs that had been slightly overpoached. The Hollandaise sauce wasn’t as creamy nor flavourful as I would have liked either.

If you are really hungry, the Melba Burger ($23++) is something to consider. The burger is made with home-made Relish, Cured Bacon, Cheese and a choice of Shoe-string fries, Salad or Wedges. I thought this was done competently but the beef patty could have done with a little more flavour. Wedges were really awesome though.

I enjoyed the thin-crusted Smoked Salmon Pizza ($18++ for 9 inches), which comes topped with Capers, Dill and Creme Fraiche aka sour cream. I would recommend the Truffle Fries ($13++) as it was good enough to warrant getting it again on my second visit here. I usually shun the truffle flavour by the 20th fry as truffle oil can get a bit overwhelming but the ones here are just unbelievably addictive. By the way, I hope you don’t feel cheated discovering that most truffle oils are not made using real truffles but simply a synthesis of a chemical compound (that smells like truffle) with olive oil.

Overall, the food at Cafe Melba is nothing to shout about and slightly overpriced, given the small serving portions. The main draw therefore, would be the laid back vibes that can make your weekend a truly lazy one.

PS: There’s one other restaurant housed within Goodman Arts Centre called La Barca, which does Tuscan cuisine and is helmed by an ex-Michelin Starred chef. Been wanting to visit but online reviews have been giving me second thoughts.

Pepperoni Pizzeria (Frankel Avenue Outlet) – Possibly the Best Pizza!

Go to any online forum with a discussion thread on “Where to find the best pizza in Singapore?” and I’m absolutely positive the name Pepperoni Pizzeria will pop up. Operated by the Les Amis Group, Pepperoni Pizzeria‘s Frankel Avenue outlet is the newest of their 3 outlets, the other 2 being located at Binjai Park and Greenwood Avenue, both around the Bukit Timah area. Given the popularity of the place, reservations are highly recommended.

If there’s one appetizer worth ordering here, it’s got to be the Fried Potobello Mushroom with Chicken & Red Wine ($18++). With a portobello the size of both my palms combined, the fried batter manages to remain crisp despite the excessive local humidity. The  red wine sauce is spectacular, rich, fatty and robust and comes with diced bacon, just my kind of gravy.

The Aglio Olio & Peperoncino ($18) or Spaghetti tossed with Garlic and Red Chili in Olive Oil is awesome as well, though priced rather steeply for something so simple. The garlic isn’t that intense despite it’s chunky look and the spiciness is well tuned. Feedback from friends HH and JH is that the other pasta dishes available here pale in comparison, so I’d suggest sticking to the Aglio Olio if you are a first timer here.

The Pizzas here are thin-crusted and come in 3 main sizes, Medium (9 inches), Large (12 inches) and Family Size (21 inches). Personally, apart from the novelty factor of having a crazily huge pizza,there really isn’t any perks in ordering a family size since it will typically be less evenly cooked. Hence, we ordered a large Salmon (Fresh Salmon, Caramelized Onions & Capers) and Frutti Di Mare (Prawns, Clams, Scallops, Squid Rings & Fish) Pizza ($23++). Yes you can have your pizza half and half here 🙂 My favourite pizza at Pepperoni’s is the salmon, whose flavour has somehow been infused within the pizza. Not sure how they do it but it’s devilishly good.

If you prefer your pizzas on the salty side, go for the Pancetta (Pancetta, Diced Tomato & Soft Egg), Prosciutto Crudo di Parma (Parma Ham & Rocket Salad) ($23++). 

So is Pepperoni the best Pizzeria in Singapore? Very possibly, I’d say.
